All right, so the breezy "Hawk" will inevitably blow sharply into the Midwest from Canada or wherever. That's no reason you have to ground your car in the Chicago area. Decidedly, there are ample travel opportunities in the late fall and early winter.

Brett Favre was on the sideline between possessions during a recent game, quizzing his receivers about what type of coverage they faced. That's when another snapshot of Sidney Rice's increasing confidence became apparent to Minnesota's ageless quarterback. "He goes, 'I was wide open,"' Favre said, recalling Rice's response.

I look at the picture on the sideline and I'm like, 'The guy was all over him."' Defensive backs around the league have begun to learn that's not enough.   -Brett Favre

The Chatfield Heritage Preservation Commission hopes to raise $9 million to renovate and save Potter Auditorium and the old elementary school and another $5 million to create an endowment to maintain the buildings. Mike Martin, a member of the commission, explained the preservation ideas during a public meeting Sunday during which architects, engineers and residents toured the buildings and exchanged ideas. Representatives of five architectural firms that might bid on renovation work attended.

The NFL Players Association opposes commissioner Roger Goodell's call for players to tell their teams' medical staffs if they think a teammate shows symptoms of a concussion, saying that is not an adequate solution. "If every player were a medical doctor that could recognize symptoms of concussions, then that would be a great idea," NFLPA assistant executive director George Atallah said in a telephone interview yesterday. "I hope that that league — instead of asking players to police each other — woul

Since Bill Belichick became New England's coach in 2000, the Jets are 7-13 against their rivals from Foxborough. Many of the games have been contentious - remember Spygate and the Eric Mangini-Belichick non-handshakes - and Belichick and current Jets coach Rex Ryan aren't exactly buddies. It won't help Bill B's mood, either, that New York won 16-9 in Week 2.

In August, Hall of Fame quarterback Fran Tarkenton was critical of Brett Favre. Tarkenton, who once owned practically every passing record now under Favre's name, said No. 4 was disrespectful to his old team, Green Bay, by becoming a Viking. "I think the Packer fans have every right to be outraged," Tarkenton said on a radio show after the signing.

Atlanta Falcons running back Jerious Norwood practiced Friday for the second consecutive day after missing the team's past four games with a hip flexor. The Falcons (5-4) hope Norwood, who is listed as questionable for Sunday, can help stabilize his position when they visit the New York Giants (5-4). "I've been working pretty much every day this week trying to get the (hip) back to normal," Norwood said.
